A contemporary kitchen renovation in Auburn, Sydney — the brief our client came to us with, what our licensed team found once the on-site inspection was done, the work carried out, and the result.
The problem
A closed-off galley kitchen was disconnected from the living area, and the laminate benchtops were chipped and no longer resealing properly — a familiar layout in Auburn's older brick homes, built for a style of cooking and entertaining that doesn't match how most families use a kitchen today.
What we found on inspection
The wall between the kitchen and living room was non-structural, making an open-plan layout achievable without engineering approval or a Development Application — a detail that's worth confirming early, since it changes both the cost and the timeline of a kitchen renovation significantly. Existing plumbing and electrical needed relocating to suit the new island, which we scoped and quoted before demolition started, not after.
What we did
Removed the dividing wall, installed a new island with relocated plumbing and power, full cabinetry replacement, porcelain benchtops, and a new rangehood with external ducting. Engineered stone was ruled out under the 2024 national ban on engineered stone benchtops, so we walked the client through porcelain as the durable, non-porous alternative.
Outcome
An open-plan kitchen and living space with an island the family actually gathers around, and benchtops that don't need resealing — a common upgrade request we see across kitchen renovations in Sydney's west.
